II · The story

How I came to be the family photographer.

I grew up in Bolton — Hindu side of the family on one shoulder, the rugby ground at Westhoughton on the other. My first camera was a hand-me-down Pentax from my dad, used mostly to photograph my cousins at our annual Diwali. I have been pointing one at the people I love ever since.

I started taking on weddings in 2018, mostly because friends of friends asked, and the asking kept going. The first Hindu wedding I covered properly was a cousin's in 2019 — the Mehndi at home, the Garba at the community hall, the Mandap at the same school assembly room I had sat my GCSEs in. I knew the room. I knew the family. I knew the pandit. The photographs were better for it.

That has stayed the shape of it. Most of my work is for people whose family I know, or for clubs whose ground I walk past on a Wednesday. The sport followed naturally — Westhoughton Lions needed match-day photographs, my cousin played for the junior side, and a season turned into five.

Today, the practice splits roughly evenly between Hindu weddings, sports days, and the quiet family afternoons in between. I keep it small so I can keep it personal. Every enquiry is read and answered by me. Every wedding is photographed by me. Every frame is edited in this same room.

III · Photography

I work close, and I work slow.

"My job on the day is to be near, not noticed. The best frame is almost always the one no-one heard me take."Deepisha

The work sits in the moment. I shoot close to the people in the room — not pressed up against them, but inside the gathering rather than across it. I avoid flash where natural light will hold; I avoid posed setups when something quieter is already happening.

Slow with the light means I will wait for it. A Saptapadi photographed at the wrong moment is a photograph of a man and a woman walking; photographed at the right moment, it is a photograph of a vow. The difference is almost always thirty seconds and one extra breath.

I edit honestly. The skin tone in the photograph is the skin tone that was in the room. The light has the warmth or coolness it actually had. I do not stretch a sunset I did not see and I do not import one I was not at. What you book is what you get.

  1. 01Close, not loud.Always in the room; never the centre of it.
  2. 02Honest light. No filters, no overlays, no skin smoothing.
  3. 03Wait for the breath. The right frame is almost always thirty seconds later.
  4. 04One photographer.I shoot every booking myself. No second-shooter handover.
IV · Languages

I work in both languages.
